While there has been no solid confirmation on the release dates of either the XBox Series X or Playstation 5, we do know that they will be launching this Holiday season, making it either November or December.
There have however been a massive amount of new game announcements as we lead up to the launches, especially from Microsoft and their XBox Game Pass, giving you day 1 access to the latest games as they release, if you are part of their subscription service.
With so many games being announced, it can be very difficult to keep up, so I have created this list of the Best XBox Series X Games, coming to XBox Game Pass for PC, Console and Ultimate (PC+Console).
I have listed them in order of release date, starting with the games exclusive to XBox Series X and PC, which you won’t find on the PS5.
Below this you can see all the games coming next year in 2021, followed by all the games coming on day 1, as well as everything else in 2020, including some already released games, re-optimized for the XBox Series X.
With that said, let’s get started!
Best XBox Series X Exclusives
With the XBox Series X launch comes a handful of exclusive game titles, for it as well as PC, all available on through the XBox Game Pass.
Halo Infinte
Release Date: November/December 2020 | Developer: 343 Industries
Halo Infinite is Microsoft’s poster child, (aka the Golden Goose) for their event launch and the game that was supposed to blow everyone’s minds, by showing just how great next gen consoles would be, thanks to all the new, custom hardware and software configurations inside their magic black box.
Unfortunately the developers of Halo Infinite, 343 Industries, dropped the ball, by delivering an opening showpiece demo of Halo Infinite (seen above), with graphics that were extremely flat, bland and simply sub-par for next gen.
Even today’s current gen games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin’s Creed, Gears 5 and Zero Horizon Dawn, are leaps and bounds graphically better than the Halo Infinite demo. Many of the games in this list are far superior as well, especially Flight Simulator 2020, which is jaw droppingly stunning.
While many online fans of the Halo series have defended it in saying that “it’s just a demo, the final version will be better”, this doesn’t take away from the fact that this is the in-game footage of a game that has taken 5 years to make, with the highest spending budget of any game before it, of $500 million.
Very unfortunate, as it seems 343 Industries have been developing this game for so long that all their code backbone is based on current gen hardware and not the next gen hardware. This is a common side effect of games that stay in development for such long periods. Technology and hardware advancements start to surpass them, as they find themselves stuck with a game that should be from the past.
The most worrying part is that the launch is only 3-4 months away, so in reality there is no time for them to strip and redo/upgrade the graphics for next gen in that time frame, so it will launch as we saw in the demo above, despite how many fans want it to be otherwise.
I doubt Microsoft will delay the launch of Halo Infinite, as this will make them look very unorganized and weak compared to their competition, (i.e. Sony), so it will most likely be seeing plenty of patches for Halo Infinite for the foreseeable future, after it’s initial launch.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
Release Date: TBC 2022 | Developer: Ninja Theory
Senua continues her saga in Hellblade 2, set to release sometime in 2021/2022, teased by one of the most intense trailers I’ve ever seen.
Ninja Theory stated that they will be releasing Hellblade 2 using the next gen Unreal 5 Engine, (which is set to have its full release in late 2021), so we are most likely looking at Hellblade 2 releasing together with it, or slightly after, in early 2022.
I have watched this trailer so many times now that I’ve lost count already.
This is a must watch with a great sound system or headphones to truly experience the great music from a band called Heilung and truly immerse yourself in being right in Senua’s face before you go to battle.
What makes this even more amazing is the fact that this video is all real time, in-game rendered footage of Senua, creating one incredibly intimidating war cry that sends shivers down your spine.
It’s like the girls locker room just took it up to the next level at half time 🙂
Hellblade takes Viking culture and graphics to a whole other level.
So, while nothing more in terms of gameplay has been released, I simply cannot wait for this game, especially how magnificent the first one was, which is also on this list down below.

Fable
Release Date: TBC 2020 (Launch) | Developer: Playground Games
The Fable series have always been associated with Xbox and PC, with nothing changing with the new release, most likely coming in 2021. This will be an XBox Game Pass Exclusive only.
Not much is known about the game thus far other than it’s more likely to be a reboot of the series rather than a sequel, as the original Fable was released all the way back in September 2004, making it nearly two decades old.
The release trailer showed us a wonderland filled with magical fairies, frogs , kingdoms and everything you expect from a classic fairy tale. I am really excited to see more from this game in the coming months.

Scorn
Release Date: TBC | Developer: Ebb Software
Scorn’s trailer was actually released earlier in May 2020, but was part of the XBox Series X and XBox Game Pass event, due to it being an exclusive title on the platform, as well as PC. It is also listed on Steam, so it will most likely be a timed exclusive on the XBox Game Pass.
Scorn is an atmospherically, grim and gray world filled with red blood to add a splash of color.
This first-person horror adventure game is set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry, designed around the idea of “being thrown into the world”. While Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will need to explore different interconnected areas in a non-linear fashion.
This mysterious and unsettling environment, becomes a character itself.
Every location contains its own theme, story, puzzles and characters, that are essential in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to make sense of the unsightly happenings to you.
Scorn’s art style is heavily inspired by the art of Alien designer H.R. Giger, which is fantastic.

Atomic Heart

Atomic Heart is a first-person shooter adventure game with events that unfold in an alternate universe during the middle of the Soviet Union. The main character of the game is a special agent P-3, who is trying to figure out what went wrong. after an unsuccessful landing on enterprise “3826”.
We don’t know too much else about this game as there has been very little info floating around, much it looks amazing and reminds me of a Russian BioShock, which I’m certainly not complaining about, as I can definitely do with more BioShock in my life.
The way Mundfish are incorporating RTX Raytracing into Atomic Heart is breathtaking, and really shows how it can be used for far more creative and gameplay purposes, other than just making wet roads reflect.

Hello Neighbor 2
Release Date: TBC 2021 | Developer: tinyBuild
Hello Neighbor 2 is a Stealth Horror Game where you’re being stalked by a mysterious creature as you try to track down Mr. Peterson (The Neighbor) who has disappeared after the events of the first game.
And that’s about it.
After playing the current alpha, I can see that nothing has improved from the first titles.
Graphics, audio and controls are as bad as the first games.
Playing those games, felt like I was playing an unfinished test demo from a single student learning game design for the first time and using MS Paint for his texturing.
Nothing has changed in Hello Neighbor 2, it’s the same lazy, rushed and broken formula, just poured into their next title, to make some quick sales.
Rinse and repeat – Yawn.
In the first games, the audio loop when your character runs doesn’t even loop properly, as you can clearly hear the start and end point clashing in the loop cycle clashing. Controls are beyond tedious, as trying to do something as simple as an accurate jump from one platform to another is extremely obnoxious and cumbersome.
None of these bugs and issues have been fixed, yet here we are at the next title. Clearly those won’t see any further fixing and development, and this game will definitely have the same issues and low quality.
Devs use UE4 as their game engine, which is the same engine that is used in Dragon Ball Z Fighter, Borderlands 3 and Everwild (further down on this list), which all have amazing cartoon style shader graphics, yet Hello Neighbor looks like it was made in some garage engine from the 90’s, with some of the worst texturing and lighting I’ve seen in a game in the past decade.
So much graphical potential in UE4 and this is the best they can come up with?
It’s guaranteed that this game will end up being as rudimental and unfinished as the previous titles, because the devs seem to have a mentality of pushing these sub-par games out as quickly as possible, with the shortest amount of work.
If you liked the first games, then I guess you will like this game, but for me this will be a hard pass, even on XBox Game Pass, as the texturing makes my eyes bleed, while the controls are simply aggravating.

Echo Generation is a turn-based adventure game, set in 1993 about a group of kids investigating some supernatural occurrences that emerged from a mysterious crash. To do so, they will have to battle the alien monsters and mechs to save their small town.
Echo Generation features good old classic RPG XP and Leveling up mechanics, we all know and love, with a splash of Pokemon pet collecting on the way.
Very much a Stranger Things vibe coming from this game, which I definitely have no complaints about. I also really like the art style which is a mix between 3D pixels of Minecraft and Lego blocks.

Best XBox Series X Games 2020
Now, let’s take a look at the games that will launch with the XBox Series X launch event, as well as everything else in 2020.
Everwild
Release Date: TBC 2020 | Developer: RARE
Everwild is by far the game I am most excited for. The trailer shows off the game’s stunning cartoon shader, mixed with some of the most breathtaking animations and creature design I’ve seen. It really reminds me of Princess Mononoke in a way.
What has me even more excited is that based on what the trailer shows, is that you need to nurture and become one with nature, the environment and the animals that exist within it.
This will be an amazing break from all the games where I am forced to kill, shoot and skin animals, which I really hate doing, as it’s something I am very against in real life as well. In everwild you get to be a healer and help those that have been injured, forming a rhythm and bond with them
For once I can become their allies and protect them instead of being an enemy out to hunt and destroy them
Everwild is both beautiful on the inside and out. I simply cannot wait for RARE to release more details and to play the game myself.

The Falconeer
Release Date: TBC 2020 | Developer: Wired Productions
By far the most underrated game at the XBox Gme Showcase in my opinion was The Falconeer
This game not only looks visually stunning but also features some epic open-world air combat gameplay as you play as a soaring Warbird in the skies.
Forget planes, falcons are the new thing as you engage in frantic aerial dogfights and deep exploration of the mysterious open-world of The Great Ursee. Fights will not only occur high above the clouds, but also amongst the waves and down through the sunken, ocean depths
You are able to take advantage of multiple Falconeer classes with individual stats, weapons and warbirds that can be upgraded through winning battles, completing quests, discovering secrets, or applying Mutagens or Chants.
It doesn’t end there, as you are also able to use ocean thermals and energy to dive, dodge, barrel-roll, and twist to gain an advantage.
What makes this game unbelievably is that it is created by a single indie developer, Tomas Sala! WOW
It looks incredible, I cannot wait.

Dragon Quest XI tells the story of a young man, who is about to participate in his village’s “Coming of Age Ceremony”. To do so, he needs to travel to a Sacred Stone accompanied by his childhood friend.
After a series of unexpected events, he learns that he is the reincarnation of a legendary hero from an ancient forgotten age, known as “The Luminary”.
Our young hero sets forth into this unknown world on a journey to discover the mysteries of his past.
Once there however, things don’t go as planned. After explaining his story to the King, he is branded as “The Darkspawn” and hunted by a relentless army.
Our hero has no other option but to flee from his pursuers, as he assembles a band of adventurers who believe he is actually The Luminary reborn, setting out on a journey to prove it, while fighting to survive an onslaught of ne’er-do-wells, all while overthrowing the dark forces that plot to plunge the world of Erdrea into chaos.
As a Square Enix title, Final Fantasy fans will feel right at home with its turn-based combat system and Japanese inspired anime style graphics.
The Definitive Edition S edition includes all the content from the original release of the acclaimed Dragon Quest XI, but also adds extra character-specific scenarios and the choice of playing with the original soundtrack or a grand orchestral version of the music.
For those who have played the earlier 2D Pixel versions of Dragon Quest I, II and III from the 80’s (or the Switch ports) will be able to transform Dragon Quest XI into the same 2D art style, together with a Japanese voice-acting option, which is a pretty neat feature in my opinion.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Release Date: 18 August 2020 | Developer: Asobo Studio
The skies are calling, are you ready!?
The next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator is leaps and bounds ahead of its last installment, Flight Simulator X in 2006, taking next gen hardware to the new heights in delivering some of the most amazing and detailed landscape and airplanes seen in a game to date.
As Microsoft owns the Google Maps competitor known as Bing Maps, they have full access to the earth’s real world geographical data, which they used to basically recreate at a 1:1 scale within this new game.
Microsoft has said that they plan to continue development of this new title for the foreseeable future, continuing to add to it, instead of releasing a new standalone version every year.
Microsoft Flight Simulator will thus allow you to travel the world and experience over 2 million cities and over 37 thousand airports, covering expansive environments from mountains down to roads, trees, rivers, animals, traffic, in a way never seen before.
Get to pilot everything from light planes to wide-bodied, commercial jets, as you test your piloting skills and experience the challenges of flying at due, against, real-time atmospheric simulation and live weather in a dynamic and living world.
Flight Simulator has been used for decades to help train real world pilots, with this new edition being no different except that it will do it vastly better. It allows you to play the game as either a casual player just out to see the sites or an up and coming commercial pilot, with an experience that scales to your level, featuring interactive and highlighted instrument guidance and checklists.

Grounded
Release Date: 28 July 2020 | Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Grounded is a fantastic open world survival game, capturing the essence of a hit movie from the 90’s called, “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”, where a shrink ray unfortunately shrinks the kids in the backyard to the size of an ant.
The kids must now try to survive in this micro world, filled with new found dangers such as gigantic spiders, wasps, termites and more.
To survive you need to build a shelter from cut grass blades, while forging weapons from pebbles and twigs, as you set out to find your way back to your home and reverse the shrink ray.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Release Date: 11 March 2020 | Developer: Moon Studios GmbH
Ori Will of the Wisps is the sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest, both of which are one of my all time favorite platform games, thanks to their incredibly immersive storyline, graphics and animations.
Ori Will of the Wisps is already available on the XBox Game Pass, but will be upgraded to support 4K 120fps, making it ready for the next gen XBox Series X console.
Thanks to the new hardware, audio is also getting a nice real time upgrade.
